Honoring MLK

Since the entire mall is on lock-down -- with a separate text this morning announcing that the Martin Luther King memorial is closed today -- thought I'd revisit the vault to find one of the memorial.  This one is from a sunrise shoot in March 2012 when the cherry blossoms were peaking (but the sun was nowhere to be found).  Feeling angry but hoping there is still hope for his legacy.

Me & my phone, walking around town

With life becoming more and more surreal with stay-at-home orders effective last week, I've been trying to maintain some semblance of sanity by walking every day.  Since Tuesday, it's been just me and my phone.  (The prior Sat., Sun. & Mon. were each with a friend at an appropriate social distance away.)  Tweaked my neck last week so didn't feel like lugging my big camera, so here's eight days of wandering as seen from my Samsung.

hometown tourist

If it's the beginning of spring in washington, dc, it's cherry blossom time.  So, from the other evening, three cherries and, for good measure, a tulip shot too.

welcoming spring

Finally.
Spring sprang and thus began the annual rituals of wandering around town in search of blooms.
In search of virginia bluebells along the potomac river.

In search of cherry blossoms on the mall.
And fun capturing dancing water from newly refilled fountains, like at the world war II memorial.

These all with the "small" camera to give my crotchety back a break.

snowy spring in the city

A few weeks ago, a late March snowfall dusted the city after spring had already sprung and some blossoms had already bloomed.  Cloaking the district in one last (?) white cover for the season.  So beautiful.

sunrise, sunset

Two visits down to the mall this year to check out the late blooming cherry blossoms, one for sunrise, one for sunset.  The Jefferson memorial was, as always, photogenic, right at sunrise and after the sun went down a few days later.

misty morning on the mall

Twice, now, in one week, I got up before 6 and out of the house before 7.  Last weekend was for my half marathon (which I mostly walked, having JUST gotten over a nasty cold & cough).  And a few days ago it was to join my photo friend for sunrise with the cherry blossoms at the tidal basin.  Except there was no sun.  The mist, however, was eerie and beautiful in its own way.
