There have been so many snowfalls this winter (including one coming tonight/tomorrow) that I am behind on posting snow photos! A few weeks ago, in the wind and cold, manassas battlefield national park was looking sublime as the sun was starting to set on the snowy fields and beautifully lit trees. Well worth the cold wet feet and practically numb fingers!

winter walking
For 2014, I made only a few simple new year's resolutions, one of which is WALK MORE. Notwithstanding the cold temperatures, I did just that this past weekend. Two days, two parks in fairfax county, virginia, nearly 15 miles done, and feet only a little worse for the wear. Happy to be out walking in the snow.

welcome 2014
Ringing in the new year with a little cleansing snow. The snow always makes a cold winter's night look more inviting.

Four score and seven years ago
On the eve of the 150th anniversary of Lincoln's famous Gettysburg speech, for the first time ever, I visited Gettysburg National Military Park. And spent a misty November day wandering the Gettysburg National Cemetery, the trails around the park, and taking in the monuments, moody trees, and bucolic fields.

First peek of fall
This past weekend, the very beginnings of the fall foliage were starting to peek through at Shenandoah River State Park. The weather was perfect for a 8 mile hike, overcast, not too hot.
